Rutikanga did his university studies at the University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. In 1979, he obtained a B.A ( Education) with History as major, and African Literature as minor. In 1980, he completed in M.A in History. He taught History at Dar-es-Salaam Teachers College for ten years, and he taught part-time at the Institute of Adult Education. From 1989 to 1995, he was a counselor/administrator of World University Service, Tanzania, an organization, which among other things, sponsored South African and Namibian refugee students, under the auspices of World University Service, Geneva. He joined National University of Rwanda in 1995, and since then, he has been teaching History. He participated as a gacaca judge in the trials of alleged genocide perpetrators in Butare town.
For the past 36 years, he has been teaching mainly African History. In the 2015-2016 academic year, he is teaching the following modules in CASS:
• History of East Africa
• Introduction to Heritage Studies
• History of International Relations
• Comparative History of Genocides
• History of Post-Independence Conflicts in the Great Lakes Region of Africa
• Contemporary World History
• Post-War Reconstruction: State-Building and Nation-Building

 

Research interest :
Rutikanga’s research interest revolves around Rwanda’s post-genocide efforts of reconstruction and reconciliation. He takes a keen interest in achievements and challenges in what the government institutions, civil society, Churches and the people have been doing for the past two decades to promote a reconciled and united society.
